What Happens at Orthodontist Appointments

What to expect ?

We understand that you may be anxious at your first visit. There is no need to worry! We will do everything we can to put you at ease and make your visit informative and even fun!

Initial Consultation

Your first appointment will consist of you completing a medical questionaire, a thorough examination and a discussion of potential treatment options.  A clinical staff member will prepare for the initial exam by taking digital photographs and an x-ray ("Panoramic X-ray") of the patient to allow us to make a proper diagnosis.

We understand that each patient has different goals and objectives regarding their orthodontic care.  Our Orthodontists will work with each patient to develop a personalised treatment plan tailored to meet their individual needs and desires.  The Orthodontists will discuss the various treatment options, how long treatment might take and the fees involved.

The important 30 minute visit is free of charge with friendly, knowledgeable staff.  We will take the time to make sure that all of your questions are answered and start you on your way to a beautiful, more confident smile!

Records

At this visit we may take further photos, more detailed x-rays, impressions of your teeth and a wax bite to show how your teeth bite together.  You will be made comfortable throughout your appointment, so there is no need to be nervous.  The information taken from the records visit allows the Orthodontist to make a detailed treatment plan most suitable for you.

Discuss Treatment

At this visit the Orthodontist explains the treatment plan and answers any questions that the parents or patients may have.  This is done with the aid of study models, x-rays and photographs.

Putting braces on

The Orthodontist will polish the surface of the patients teeth before placing the braces.  Once all the braces are placed, a light wire is inserted into the brackets and they are then attached with ligature ties.  The teeth may be tender for the first few days as you get used to the braces. The patient is given a special toothbrush and given instructions on how to brush, use superfloss and wax.

How often will I have appointments?

Appointments are scheduled according to each patient's needs.  Most patients in braces will be seen every 4 to 6 weeks.  If there are specific situations that require more frequent monitoring, we will schedule appointments accordingly.
